FOOD STAMP APPLICATIONS
(SNAP - Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program)
WHAT IS SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps low-income people
and families with food purchases. Benefits are provided on the Link
Card - an electronic card that is accepted at most grocery stores.
The program is managed by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS)
of the United States Department of Agriculture. The
Department of Human Services (DHS) administers the program in Illinois.
Households must fill out an application form to apply for benefits,
and then meet with program administrators to complete the process. The
DuPage office is in Glen Ellyn. The pantry encourages households to take
advantage of this food stamp program to supplement their food needs.
Volunteers at Loaves & Fishes are available to help clients file their
application. (We do not issue any food stamps.) The application can
be submitted online or in writing.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Generally, households eligible for SNAP benefits:
• meet income qualifications, which are the same as Loaves & Fishes income
eligibility guidelines, and
• have US citizenship, or have Legal Permanent Resident status for at least
5 years.
The amount of the monthly SNAP benefit is determined by DHS, and depends on
the number of people in the
household, as well as other considerations.
WHEN IS THE PROGRAM AVAILABLE?
Loaves & Fishes volunteers are generally available to assist with SNAP
applications during food distribution
hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Appointments are
encouraged.
WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD THEY BRING?
Documentation is not required for the application. However, applicants are
encouraged to bring a photo ID,
a rent or mortgage statement, and all income documents for the past 30 days
(for all members of the household)
to start your online application.
Please provide your name, address, and contact information when requesting
an appointment. A SNAP brochure is available at the pantry for clients who
are requesting further information.
