Public Benefit Assistance

LOAVES AND FISHESIf you are facing an emergency, or need help in understanding the community assistance that might be available to you or your household, a representative from Loaves & Fishes can help you.

Affordable Health Care (ACA)
Work with a certified Illinois In Person Counselor who will assist you with affordable health care coverage through Get Covered Illinois, the official Health Marketplace. Documents must be available during appointments. Visit Enroll DuPage website.
Illinois Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP)
Submit your application online for additional food for your family. Benefits are provided on the Link Card, an electronic card that can be used at most grocery stores. Visit SNAP website.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
This assistance program helps eligible households pay winter gas or electric bills. Documents must be made available during the appointment. Visit LIHEAP website.

Access DuPage Medical Care
Access DuPage provides medical assistance for DuPage residents who do not qualify for Medicaid, Medicare or Illinois Marketplace coverage. Make an appointment to fill out an application at reception. Visit Access Dupage website.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

The VITA team (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is back! Last year, the volunteer tax team had completed 362 returns for the community, yielding $576,000 in Federal refunds and $54,000 in state refunds. This year, the team is offering hours on Wednesdays (4:30-7:30pm), Saturdays (8:30am-12:30pm) and Sundays (11:00am-3:00pm). Please call for an appointment, and don’t forget to bring:

  • A copy of 2012 return
  • Proof of identity and social security numbers
  • W-2, 1098 or 1099 forms
  • Information on any other income sources
  • Information on your tax credits and deductions
  • Blank check for refund direct deposit
  • Job Search Support

    Job coaches offer technical and practical job search support for anyone who is unemployed or looking for a job change. Work one-on-one at Loaves & Fishes with a coach to improve your resume, networking techniques and interviewing skills. Make an appointment to get help with your job search.

    Shopping Matters Grocery Tour

    Choosing healthy, nourishing foods for your family on a limited budget is not easy. We can help. Join a Shopping Matters guided grocery store tour in the Loaves & Fishes pantry. Learn great tips and skills for purchasing healthy foods for your family while sticking to a food budget. Shopping tours will be scheduled.

    English Language Classes

    ESLDevelop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills necessary for work, education and everyday communication. Classes run 16 weeks (10 weeks in the summer), Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Classes are taught by College of DuPage. Register at the Loaves & Fishes reception desk.     Computer Classes

    Learn basic computer skills at your own pace. Classes are held at Loaves & Fishes on Thursday evenings, from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. and on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Attendance is limited.     All My Money

    Don’t miss this 6-session workshop that will help you with your personal finances and money challenges. Sessions take place on Saturdays from 9-10 a.m. at Loaves & Fishes. Sign up now at the reception desk.

    Support for Veterans

    Those who have served in the military and members of their family are invited to Loaves & Fishes to find the course of action that’s right for you. Information on assistance and support programs to help with expenses and family essentials provided by: Veterans Assistance Commission of DuPage County.

    Emotional Support: Someone to Talk To
